Capturing the Collective Mood of the Times

One element of historical writing or for that matter any writing depends on the collective mood of the times and characters. While writing ‘ALCHEMIST GIFT’ I did a lot of research not only in the daily mundane activities during the Renaissance but also the motivations of the people during that era. There are always the staples of the human condition: love, hate, greed, lust, envy, honor, fear and hope (to name a few) that transcend time and are always pushing and pulling us in our emotional lives.

Marcella, Strong and Resilient

Marcella, Strong and Resilient

During the Renaissance, the vast majority of the people were peasants, many were subsistence farmers who didn’t own the land they were tilling. These hapless folks were susceptible to every disease, the whims of the weather, military invasions from the local fiefdoms, pestilence and famine. The one shining light in this terrible twilight was the Catholic Church. The church had a very large say in every aspect of a person’s life. Try to imagine that no matter how miserable your life was, if you obeyed all of the church laws and with the help of the priest, you would go to heaven when you died, and if you did not …an eternity of torment and greater suffering in hell awaited you.

When I was developing my characters’ psyches, I tried to incorporate the hopes and fears they would have. For that reason you will see my characters pray, make their confessions, and show their respect toward the clergy and church teachings. I think it would be natural for my characters to prayer and show concern for their immortal souls. They weren’t religious fanatics, only people trying to find balance between the here and now and what the promised afterlife had in store for them.

Main Theme of Alchemist Gift is We are all one

Alchemist Gift

Alchemist Gift

Alchemist Gift’s Main Theme

The main theme of Alchemist Gift is the idea we are all one, we always have been and always will be. We are the mirror to all and the measure of none.
We are all part of a great collective, passing through time together, dependent on on another and unfathomably connected by innumerable strands, so that no one of us can be truly independent.
With that in mind, the characters who inhabit the pages of Alchemist Gift are inextricably connected. They all tell the same story and each one’s contribution is as important as the next. Because of that, the protagonist Roland, does not carry the entire story. He shares that privilege with a host of other people, many whom he shall never meet, but each one has affected his life, not only in the present but when he travels to the past as well.
To take the idea further, these connections go back to all of our distant pasts. The actions of our unknown ancestors have delivered us to this exact moment in time. Who can say that if one of your or my forefathers hadn’t taken a certain turn in a path, or hadn’t had the strength or luck to survive and attack from a wild animal or a neighboring tribe or if he hadn’t mated with a certain woman, on a certain day optimal for conception, neither one of us may exist. It is truly a miracle we are here.

Here are some of the reviews already online:

This was a great read. The author has done a wonderful job weaving the many story lines into one continuous flow, with the back stories as interesting as the main arc of the novel. Unlike a lot of books, you really care about all of the characters, the decisions they make, and their ultimate fates. Even the supporting characters are well developed and you get a sense of their lives and motivations as well as those of the main characters. As with real life, there are moments of happiness and misery, love and hatred, humor and tragedies. The time travel is reminiscent of the ‘Outlander’ series–fantastical yet readily believable.

Roland’s gift from the alchemist is another life in another time. Will he squander the opportunity, or find personal redemption? The author keeps your interest and truly delivers in a delicious twist at the end. I’m anxious to find out what happens to Liz, who is left in his past and whose continuing story is hinted at in book.- Amazon Customer 5 Stars

‘Alchemist Gift’ by author Mark Giglio takes his readers on a hooking adventure through the times back in Medieval period of Italy during the Renaissance with a strong, captivating story line where we’ll get to meet an absorbing character of 28 year old Roland Huges who will be transported through times from present days San Diego to Medieval Italy to find answers to his present through past mending his future.
Definitely author Mark Giglio proves to have done a great groundwork research on the times of Renaissance giving a very clear visualistic glimpse of the unjust times of darkness, ruled by high society politics of that era through some strong life like characters and their stories making it possible for readers to relive history with a smooth flowing story plot.
Without revealing much and being the book spoiler i’d like to suggest readers not to mistake ‘Alchemist Gift’ with any other book for just being a simple novel of time intersections and transportation, instead just leave your choice of reading to talented author Mark Giglio who is sure to give his readers an interesting, entertaining discovery of history.
Highly recommended to all and esp. to those looking for strong story line and to history lovers. – Eishinas 5 Stars

Alchemist Gift in a nutshell

Alchemist Gift is Time Travel to the Age of Alchemy with Renaissance history action, 3D characters you love and hate, beautiful descriptions that put you into scenes of Italy & Bavaria and the lives of the characters, and uplifting assurance of the goodness of man, with a satisfying ending.

Goodreads review

I did a beta read of the book. Alchemist Gift was difficult to put down. It satisfies on so many levels. The author has done his homework on the Renaissance period of the late 1400s, early 1500s. He captures the politics, culture and religion of the times through six love stories. The human condition is apparent in the characters with love, desire, lust, kindness, brutality, spirituality, and courage. There are many strong women in the story who are strong for their character and confidence. From philosophy to science and science fiction the book introduces you to the ancient Bagdad battery that powers a Renaissance version of a laser beam up to the magical Alchemist Cabinet. The characters experience time in a non-linear fashion reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. The descriptions made me feel like I was there experiencing the events with all my senses. There is action, adventure, magic, romance, history, culture and more. This book is a full course meal.

Amazon Description

The Year According to the Art of Giglio – Mark’s Humor

This Year Was a Challenging Year for Mark Giglio

Yes it was quite a year! Mark recounted his chance meeting with Larry Hagman of Dallas and I Dream of Jeannie fame in an art gallery in Ojai. Here was an opportunity to schmooz with his fellow man and savor the absurdities of life. Videos can be seen on YouTube.com at Living the Art of Giglio.

Mark is also a patriot. He served his country during the Vietnam War as a VIP (Voice Intercept Processor). listening to the Cuban air force for signs of invasion. In 2014 to honor his country and his fellow veterans he instituted the Veterans Day Grub Crawl.

Thanks Dennys, Claim Jumper, Menchies Yogurt, Pizza Factory, Red Lobster and Applebees for the grub. He started the evening before Veteran’s Day at Claim Jumper with good ol’ American Steak and Potatoes, a staple of all Veterans. Breakfast was at Dennys with their famous Grand Slam and maple shots. It was an eatingfest all day culminating at Applebees with Steak and Potatoes with a rolaid chaser. It was an all American Day.

December 11, 2014 3:17 PM Pasquali aka Blackie, Mark’s cat, becomes disgruntled. He and Mark have been inseparable friends for the last nine years since Blackie was rescued from certain death when he was abandoned in a paper shopping bag as a kitten (He came in a plain brown wrapper). Blackie was at Mark’s side all the way through the writing of Alchemist Gift. When Mark jokingly called Blackie his MEWS, Blackie took offense knowing that by psychic connection he had been feeding the entire novel to Mark. Mark was HIS ghost writer. This really disturbed him. He would have done something about it but his attention was always drawn away by something as important as a noisy black fly that landed on Mark’s hand or the tantilizing f_f_f_t of the pealing back of a cat food can which studies show cats can hear from over half a mile away.

At Halloween Mark climbed into his pumpkin shell. “Kept in a pumpkin shell; escape with an ebook.”

Kept in a Pumpkin Shell? Escape with an Ebook.

Kept in a Pumpkin Shell? Escape with an Ebook.

At Christmas when Mark’s fellow Americans became victims of DRONE ACCIDENTS he felt compassion for these less fortunate and was compelled to warn them of the dangers of DRONE KNEE

Drone Knee

Drone Knee

DRONE ANKLE

Drone Ankle Injury

Drone Ankle Injury

and the dangers of becoming a FUGITIVE FROM THE FAA for drone regulation offenses.

FAA Can Never Find Me

FAA Can Never Find Me

Mark’s Christmas epiphany is “Give Mark’s ebook, Alchemist Gift. One size fits all!”

Why didn't they give me Mark's ebook, Alchemist Gift?

Why didn’t they give me Mark’s ebook, Alchemist Gift?

Not that he would ever wear a bra; well, just that once.

And so the year ends. What will the next years bring? More of Mark’s patriotic and humanitarian gestures? More of Blackie’s quest to get recognition for his novel, Alchemist Gift? And I hear Blackie is writing a new graphic novel, Chat Noir! Stay tuned at www.alchemististgift.com and on the www.youtube.com channel, Living the Life of Giglio.
